forwarding email address will allow your colleagues to send an email
to your UW email address and it will be forwarded to your email service
provider.
Gigabyte (GB)

5 GB:  | A two hour movie on a DVD |
25 GB:  | About 800 feet of shelved books |
1000 GB:  | A university library worth of books |
The size of a file depends on what it contains, how much it contains, and the format in which the data is stored.
Fastrans Server

Gigabit per second (Gbs)
A standard measure of size for computer data bandwidth. One gigabit
per second is up to one billion bits per second or around 100 million
characters per second.

Kilobyte (KB, or K)
A standard measure of size for computer data. One Kilobyte is 1,024
bytes. There are 1,024 Kilobytes in one Megabyte (MB).
Some examples:
1 KB: | A very short story | |
2 KB: | The UW Logo as used on the UW internal home page
10 KB: | An encyclopedic page
100 KB: | A very low resolution photograph |
The size of a file depends on what it contains, how much it contains, and the format in which the data is stored.
Learning Management System
A learning management system (commonly abbreviated as LMS) is
a software application for the administration, documentation,
tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and
online events, e-learning programs, and training content.
Lolo Server

research and computationally intensive tasks, such as generating
statistics on large data sets. Use your UW NetID and password
to log in to Mead.
Megabyte (MB)
A standard measure of size for computer data. One Megabyte is
sometimes defined as one million bytes, and other times as
1,024 kilobytes (KB) which is 1,048,576 bytes.
Some examples:
1 MB: | One novel (or about 200 pages of text saved as a Microsoft Word document) |
2 MB: | A high resolution photograph |
10 MB: | A minute of high-fidelity sound OR a digital chest X-ray |
25 MB: | A medium-sized PowerPoint presentation |
500 MB: | A CD of data |
The size of a file depends on what it contains, how much it contains, and the format in which the data is stored.
NB: | Normally disks are described using the 1,000,000 byte megabyte and computer memory uses the 1,024 x 1,024 byte megabyte. UW quotas couch disk usage in "memory megabytes" since it errs in the user's favor. If you go out and buy an "80 Gigabyte disk" though, you'll get 80,000 million bytes (or even a little less after formatting takes its toll), not 80 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 which would be 85,899+ million bytes. |
