Should you be eligible for email as part of your affiliation with the University of Washington (UW), this will also be your email address. The UW email systems allow you to forward your email to another email service provider (e.g., Google Mail, Microsoft Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, etc.). This forwarding email address will allow your colleagues to send an email to your UW email address and it will be forwarded to your email service provider.

Gigabyte (GB)
A standard measure of size for computer data. One Gigabyte is sometimes defined as one billion bytes, and other times as 1,024 megabytes (MB).

Some examples:

GB A 30 minute episode of "Gilligan's Island"
GB A two hour movie on a DVD
25 GB About 800 feet of shelved books
1000 GB A university library worth of books

The size of a file depends on what it contains, how much it contains, and the format in which the data is stored.

Fastrans Server
The Fastrans application server.

Gigabit per second (Gbs)
A standard measure of size for computer data bandwidth. One gigabit per second is up to one billion bits per second or around 100 million characters per second.

Gutenberg
Computer for doing work related to web publishing on the www.washington.edu cluster.

Homer

ImpactSurvey
A cluster hosting survey apparatus for the iSchool.

Instructor class lists
Class rosters for instructors available either as listprocs or electronic class lists.

Kilobyte (KB, or K)
A standard measure of size for computer data. One Kilobyte is 1,024 bytes. There are 1,024 Kilobytes in one Megabyte (MB).

Some examples:

KB A very short story
KB The UW Logo as used on the UW internal home page
10 KB An encyclopedic page
100 KB A very low resolution photograph

The size of a file depends on what it contains, how much it contains, and the format in which the data is stored.

Learning Management System
A learning management system (commonly abbreviated as LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content.

Lolo Server
Lolo is a set of scalable storage services for researchers, including easy to use tape-based archives and a disk based, CIFS accessible collaboration space. Lolo is equipped with 10 Gbs connections to campus, the research Internet, and Hyak. With Hyak, it is a key component in the UW research cyberinfrastructure.

Mailman
A Web-based mail list manager where owners can create lists for group discussions or to disseminate information.

Mailman List
An email distribution list that can be used for group discussions or to disseminate information.

Managed Workstation File Service (I:\groups)
A shared file storage solution for Managed Workstation customers

Uniform Access computer for work-related use by UW students, faculty and staff within the Business Administration department. (address: mead.u.washington.edu). A Mead account is useful for research and computationally intensive tasks, such as generating statistics on large data sets. Use your UW NetID and password to log in to Mead.

Megabyte (MB)
A standard measure of size for computer data. One Megabyte is sometimes defined as one million bytes, and other times as 1,024 kilobytes (KB) which is 1,048,576 bytes.

Some examples:

MB One novel (or about 200 pages of text saved as a Microsoft Word document)
MB A high resolution photograph
10 MB A minute of high-fidelity sound OR a digital chest X-ray
25 MB A medium-sized PowerPoint presentation
500 MB A CD of data

The size of a file depends on what it contains, how much it contains, and the format in which the data is stored.

NB:  Normally disks are described using the 1,000,000 byte megabyte and computer memory uses the 1,024 x 1,024 byte megabyte. UW quotas couch disk usage in "memory megabytes" since it errs in the user's favor. If you go out and buy an "80 Gigabyte disk" though, you'll get 80,000 million bytes (or even a little less after formatting takes its toll), not 80 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 which would be 85,899+ million bytes.
